Cyril Scurrell was born on 5th October 1912 (Ipswich Q4-1912 4A:1931), son of Ernest George and May SCURRELL (née CRISP) of Ipswich.

He married Ada Flegg TURNER [5-5-1906] in Ipswich in 1935, who married Joseph DONNELLY in Ipswich in 1953.

In the 1939 register he was manager of a wine store, living with his wife at 53 High Street, Brandon, with no closed records
Probate put his address as High Street, Brandon, admin. to Stanley Herbert BRAND, railway signalman.

In February 1945 the 1st Battalion, Ox and Bucks was involved in the Allied invasion of the German Rhineland, taking part in Operation Veritable, the "Battle of the Reichswald", an assault by five divisions on the Reichswald Forest. The battalion was involved in heavy fighting against German paratroopers and armour at the village of Asperberg.

CWGC records 14 of the battalion killed on the 17th February. Cyril was initially buried in Hervorst, Germany close to where he fell (just north of GOCH) but moved to Rheichswald on 23rd September 1946.

The Bury Free Press of 9th March 1945 reported :-
BRANDON SOLDIER KILLED- Official information has been received by Mrs C.Scurrell, High Street, Brandon, that her husband, L/Cpl. C.Scurrell, has been killed in action in Western Europe.
L/Cpl. Scurrell was formerly manager for Moss and Potter, wine and spirit merchants and was 32 years of age.
